Finding Joy in Motherhood

I love general conference. This year my favorite talk was given by Elder Ballard. If you didn't hear it, here's the link.

Basically he said:
Mothers have the most important job in the world.
It is important for mothers to recognize their important role and to put their children first. Children will probably only live with their parents for 1/4th of a parent's life. Little children will only be little children for 1/10th of a parent's life.

What can young mothers do to reduce pressures and enjoy their families more?

1. Recognize that the joy of motherhood comes in moments. Don't rush past those fleeting moments. Treasure the "doing" more than the "getting done".
2. Don't over-schedule. Take time to listen, laugh, and play together.
3. Find time for yourself. Make time for one or two things that will enrich your life. Replenish yourself or you'll have less to give to others. Don't waste time watching soap operas and surfing the net.
4. Pray, study, and teach the gospel. Pray about your children and your role as a mother.

What can husbands do to support their wives?

1. Show appreciation; give validation to your wives for what they do.
2. Take time to talk with your wife about each child's needs.
3. Give your wife a day away now and then.
4. Help your wife around the house.
5. Come home from work and take an active roll with your family. Don't waste time watching sports, etc. Instead, spend time with your family.

Anyway, so, good work fellow mommies! I guess we're doing something important!!!

Now let's all go get a massage! We deserve it!

I agree with you leah that was a wonderful talk. I think we need more recognition for what we do day in and day out. It's not as easy as people think it is. Oh and I made those yummy chocolate chip cookies tonight and my parents loved them.

I LOVED this message!! I felt like he was talking directly to me about my sometimes-overscheduled-always-too-busy-life, and my kids are only 7 and 4--it was a great wake up call!

I loved this talk as well! He always gives such applicable talks (in my opinion). I'm going to print out your little summary and put it on the fridge to help me remember!

Thanks for the summary! (I was asleep- just taking a little time out for myself, you know?!)

Wasn't that the best talk ever! It was just what I needed to hear. I tend to try and "get done" all the things and then do something with the kids. I need to concentrate on the "doings" a little bit more. Being a mom is HARD but VERY VERY REWARDING!!

I loved that talk too Leah! I think it was my favorite as well because I have had such a hard week as a mother. Katelin has been a really rough kid and throwing fits and all that drama. I think that it was all something that I needed to hear. I think that sometimes I do think I have so much to get done I just let Katelin watch movies all day instead of playing with her. Now about the MESSAGE that sounds great how about a Peticure too!!! :) That would be a fun Baby party! Or lets do like you said and just get together with all our hubbys and kids!
