The Many Hairstyles of my Hirsute Husband

In the 3 years that we have been married, Garrit has sported almost every hair/facial hair style imaginable. Luckily, I don't really care... it's kinda fun. He's very creative. I'm just sorry that I don't have photos to capture every style. However, I do have a few to document "The Many Hairstyles of my Handsomely Hirsute Husband".

Hmmmm.

Rasta Baby

Drew likes to wear his dad's clothes. Here he is sporting Garrit's beanie. Can't you just see him singing, "No Woman, No Cry"? What a cutie!

I FINALLY Own an Island!

That's right folks, I am finally the owner of a wonderful little island! It's only 31 inches wide and 54 inches long but it's MINE, ALL MINE! My clever hubby built it for me. It's almost finished! He just needs to put the doors on and I need to paint it. Oh, and of course, the counter top needs to be installed. Garrit says it'll be finished by my birthday. I can't wait!!!

No man is an island but I think every woman needs one. Garrit is taking orders.

Yes, I'm Mormon.

I am a Mormon; a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Those of you who know me know that my religion is not just something I do on Sunday. It affects everything I do every minute of every day. My church has received a lot of attention lately (especially as Mitt Romney gains popularity in the presidential poles). People now know a lot about the church, but some of you still want to know more. So, here are some facts about the church and what I believe:

The Basics

* “Mormon” is a nickname for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Members are often referred to as “Mormons,” “Latter-day Saints,” or “LDS.” The term “Saint” means “member.”
* The Church was restored in 1830 in upstate New York with Joseph Smith as its first prophet and president. Today it is headquartered in Salt Lake City, with President Gordon B. Hinckley as the present and prophet.
* There are now over 13 million members in 176 countries and territories. About 6 million of these are in the United States, making us the fourth largest Christian denomination in America. As one of the fastest growing Christian faiths in the world, we complete a new chapel every working day. Members pay a tithe, which is 10 percent of their income, making this and other programs possible.
* Local congregations are led by volunteer, unpaid members. Both men and women serve in assigned leadership positions.
* Mormons are well represented in politics and government. (In the United States, for example, there are 16 members in Congress, from both political parties.) Members also serve in high and trusted positions throughout the world in business, medicine, law, education, media, sports, and entertainment.

Faith

* We believe in the eternity of the soul, that God is the Father of our spirits, and that we can return to Him after death.
* Mormons are Christians with strong, traditional values. We believe that Jesus Christ is our personal Savior, and we try to model our lives after Him and His teachings. We commemorate Christ’s atoning sacrifice in our Sunday worship services, similar to taking communion in other churches. We accept as fellow Christians all who believe Jesus Christ to be the Son of God and the Savior of all mankind. Many Christians do not understand that we have much common ground with them. Joseph Smith taught that Jesus Christ is the core of our belief, and everything else is an appendage to it (see Elders’ Journal, July 1838, 44). The name of the Church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
* We believe the original church that Jesus established was lost and has been restored again in our day. The priesthood, the authority given to man to act in the name of God, with apostles and a prophet to lead us, has been restored as have all necessary ordinances of salvation.
* We believe in and we use the Holy Bible, both the Old and New Testaments.
* And we believe in the Book of Mormon and other books of scripture which support and authenticate the Bible and testify of the ministry and divinity of Christ and of God’s ongoing revelation to man. Indeed, the Book of Mormon is “Another Testament of Jesus Christ.”

Family

* Mormons place particularly strong emphasis on family as the basic unit of the Church and of society. We have a deep commitment to marriage (defined as a union between one man and one woman). Polygamy, a limited practice in the early pioneer days of the Church, was discontinued in 1890, some 117 years ago.
* Families and individuals, whether members of our faith or not, can attend Sunday services in our chapels. Here we worship together, instructing one another from the scriptures.
* Latter-day Saint families are encouraged to hold family home evenings weekly, usually on Monday nights. This provides a regular and predictable time for parents to teach values to their children and to have fun together. We invite those not of our faith to adopt this practice with their own families.
* The Church has auxiliary programs for women, youth, and children as a support to the family. These programs provide such things as religious instruction, opportunities for Christian service, sports, drama, music, and Scouting.
* There is also much focus on extended family, genealogy, and personal family history, providing young and old with a stronger sense of roots, identity, and belonging. The highest and most sacred ordinances of our faith relate to our families, both living and dead, and some of these ordinances take place in our temples.

Fruits

The Savior said, “by their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:20). A church, or any way of life, should be judged by the fruits or the results that it generates. Here are a few examples of the fruits of my church, based on United States statistics. (These would be similar throughout the world among practicing Mormons - by which we mean those who attend church and the temple regularly):

* One of the fruits is a longer life. Studies show that practicing Mormons are healthier and therefore live longer than the national average. In 1833 the Lord revealed to Joseph Smith the Word of Wisdom, which is the way to live in order to enjoy a long and healthy life.
* Second, those who are married in and attend the temple regularly have a divorce rate far below the national and world average.
* Third, we achieve an educational level that is higher than the national average.
* Fourth, over 70,000 members volunteer at their own expense to serve for 18 to 24 months in humanitarian efforts, Church service assignments, and full-time missionary service throughout the world.
* And fifth, we place strong emphasis on self-reliance and a solid work ethic. We encourage active involvement in our communities and in providing service to others. The Church continues to donate substantial money, goods, and services to humanitarian causes around the globe, including untold hours of labor donated by members to assist in disaster cleanup and relief.

I know that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is Jesus Christ's church re-established today. Sometimes life is hard, but being a member of Christ's church makes life a lot easier. With Jesus Christ at my side, anything is possible. Living my religion makes me happy.

Hopefully, this post answered some questions. Email me with more questions or check out the link on the top right hand side of my blog (www.mormon.org).

What A Difference Some Paint Makes

Okay, I'll admit. I've been stalling. I haven't posted any pictures of the new house because it's taking us sooo long to get things done. It is so hard to do anything with little Drew around! But I have painted. And painted. And painted.

Garrit is almost finished with the kitchen island. And then we can FINALLY put in the new floor and baseboards. And then we'll replace the lights and hardware in the kitchen... someday.

Here's what we've done so far:

Cheapskate

I am a penny pincher. A cheapskate. A tightwad. And I'm proud of it. I really don't like to spend my money on anything. When I do break down and spend a little (or a lot), I always feel like I'm spending too much. I like getting stuff for free (and I often do) but my FAVORITE thing is when companies pay ME to take their stuff (and they sometimes do).

Most of the time being a penny pincher is great. (Remember when I got $170.00 worth of groceries for $1.50? That was sooooo cool!) With a little effort, I can find (almost) anything on sale. But sometimes, being a penny pincher REALLY STINKS.

Take for example, exhibit A: Tonight, Garrit and I went to Target to buy a few essentials. We checked out and Garrit paid for the groceries. I was busy with Drew so I didn't calculate before hand how much our purchases would cost. When I heard the checker say, "$101.98" I nearly fainted! "What in the world did my crazy husband buy?" I thought to myself.

While happy-go-lucky Garrit was pushing our shopping cart and baby to the car, I frantically checked our receipt. I stopped in my tracks as I read the first item on the list.

Cream of Weber Orange Juice... $4.99

"What! That's outrageous! What a scam!" I cried as onlookers quickly escaped to their vehicles wearing warm, winter coats and cold, contemptuous looks. "How can they charge $4.99 for a gallon of orange juice???" I yelled. "A can of orange juice concentrate costs 99 cents at Wal-Mart!"

Then came the melt-down. I won't tell you all the gory details. I'll just say that as I read the receipt aloud there in the Target parking lot, I had a "tantrum" (to put it lightly). That was about 2 hours ago and there is still a hint of steam billowing out of my ears.

Garrit has been very patient with his penny pinching wife. He likes to save money too. However, sometimes (like tonight) my frantic frugality frustrates him. We didn't buy anything REALLY expensive at Target; just some jeans for Garrit, jammies and socks for Drew, and ingredients for the curry I'm making for dinner tomorrow night. So, why did I freak out in the parking lot and totally embarrass my husband and sister? Like I said earlier, "sometimes being a penny pincher REALLY STINKS".

So, I'm sorry, Garrit and Sarah, for the rampage. And I'm going to try not to worry about the 5 dollar orange juice, the 4 dollar carrots and the 25 dollar jeans. And I'm going to be thankful for all the really, really cheap things in life. Like beans. And 75 cent bread at the Hostess Bakery outlet. And the "as-is" section at Ikea.

The End.

You're Ridin' It, Dude!

My husband is so cool. Here he is indoor surfing.

Indoor surfing! Why didn't I think of that? Now Utah really does have it all!

Anyway, the Flowrider is this machine up in Ogden that shoots jets of water so powerful you can surf (or boogie board) on them. On Friday we went up to Ogden with Schmath, Ryan, and Ben. The boys got their surf on inside while the girls window shopped outside in the bitter cold. Yeah, us girls were pretty jealous. It looked like a blast!

So, next time we're in Ogden, I'm going surfing!

Anyone else want to go?

It's Drew, Pardner

My dad just commented on this slide show. I had to post what he said becuase it's so funny.

Dad: "This is how Gene Autrey and Roy Rogers got their start."

"Drew is a good name for a cowboy. If the bad guy says "Draw", Drew might say, "It's "Drew" pardner". The bad guy will pause to think, "drew or draw? Present tense or past?", difusing the tension."

Isn't he funny?

Awwwww!

Drew loves his Dad!

Saturday, October 27, 2007

Before I had a baby, and even up until last month, I always encouraged mothers to have "just one more" baby. Many women (and men) in lds culture do this same thing. Around baby's first birthday, it's customary to begin chiding mommy about having, "just one more". "When is the next one coming?", or, "Are you trying for more yet?", we ask.

Drew turned one year last month and so (of course) everyone wants to know when the next little Jacobson will be conceived. I'd just like to take a moment to set the record straight on this subject. Just so you all know there will be NO MORE LITTLE NEWBORN BABIES in this house for a long, long time. Furthermore, if Drew's non-sleeping habits continue there will be no more little newborn babies in this house EVER.

I think the kid has some kind of built-in alarm that triggers his crying mechanism every time I try to get some shut-eye. If only I could disconnect the alarm. It's 3:30 a.m. and I still haven't gotten a single wink. Yes, this has been going on for about 13 months. And yes, I have tried Baby Wise, and Ferber, and The No Cry Sleep Solution, and The Secrets of the Baby Whisperer, and Tylenol... I'm exhausted.

Wish me luck, I'm going to try (again) to get some sleep.

The End.

*Disclaimer* Don't worry, I'm not the least bit mad at anyone for asking about "just one more". This is just a random rant. And actually, we probably will have another one in a couple of years. Earlier if Drew starts sleeping.

Addict

Okay, just one more post today and I'll go to bed.

Friends, I need help.

My name is Leah,
and I am addicted to chocolate molten lava cake.
I think about it always,
except when I am asleep,
and then I dream about chocolate molten lava cake.

Seriously, Sarah made some last night and I really can't stop eating it!

If you think you can help me, please post your suggestions.

If you want the recipe for the cake, here it is:

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup flour
3/4 cup granulated Sugar
3 tablespoons cocoa
2 teaspoons baking Powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
2 tablespoons vegetable Oil
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup brown Sugar
1/4 cup cocoa
1 3/4 cups boiling water

PREPARATION:

Heat oven to 350°. In a mixing bowl, stir together flour, sugar, 3 tablespoons cocoa, baking powder and salt. With a fork, mix in milk, oil and vanilla.
Spread the batter evenly in a lightly buttered 9-inch square baking pan. Combine brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa; sprinkle over the batter. Slowly pour boiling hot water over the batter and brown sugar-cocoa mixture. Bake cake for 40 minutes. (We only had to bake ours for 30 minutes). Let cake stand for 5 minutes. Spoon into dessert dishes. Top with ice cream or whipped topping. Enjoy!

P.S. I just googled chocoholics anonymous and found this awesome site. Check it out: http://www.chocoholicsanonymous.com.au/

Cornbelly's

Tonight for family home evening we checked out Cornbelly's, the corn maze and pumpkin patch, in Lehi. Drew LOVED it! His favorite part was the maze. There was some pretty corny (sorry, I couldn't resist) music playing and Drew danced from the beginning of the maze to the end. We were hoping to get there early so I could get some pictures of Drew in the pumpkin patch, but it gets dark so quickly now! We were too late! I'll have to get some more pumpkin pictures when it's light.

If you're thinking of going, admission was $10 a person but there was a lot to see. Plan on spending at least 2 hours and make sure you ride the cow train. Try to get on when the 16 year old kid is driving the train... he drove so fast I thought the whole train was going to tip. What a thrill.

Lions and Beehives and Oaks? Oh My!!

This weekend my friends from California, Valerie and Catherine, came to visit. Today was their last day in town so we decided to head up to Salt Lake and tour Temple Square. We had SUCH a fun time! We went to the Lion House for lunch, toured the Beehive House, walked around the Temple and the Tabernacle, rode the elevator up to the 29th floor of the Church Office Building, and when we were in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, guess who we saw? ELDER DALLEN H. OAKS! We rode the elevator with him down from the Roof Restaurant and Valerie and Catherine both got pictures with him!

Here are some pictures of our fun day:

(Sorry, there are none of Elder Oaks)

P.S. Yes, I do wear my BAD HAIR DAY shirt every day.

Now that I'm a mom, every day is a bad hair day.

Midnight Snack

Last night at about midnight, Drew woke up crying HYSTERICALLY. He was thrashing in his crib and when I picked him up, he started thrashing in my arms. I tried to give him a bottle and rock him but he cried and cried and wouldn't settle down. After about 5 minutes, Garrit got up to see what was going on. He also tried his best to comfort Drew but Drew kept screaming. We were really worried because little Drew looked like he was in terrible pain. Right as we were about to pack up for the E.R., Garrit decided to try one more tactic to get the poor kid to calm down. He opened the fridge and set Drew down in front of it. That did the trick. I guess Baby just wanted a midnight snack.

Give a Little Wistle.

Drew wants to be just like his Dad. Last week, Garrit was whistling for Drew and ever since then, Drew has been practicing his little whistle. Today he almost got it!

Oh Boy!

Gender studies is a field of interdisciplinary study which analyzes the phenomenon of gender. It examines both cultural representations of gender and people's lived experience.

The field emerged from a number of different areas: the sociology of the 1950s and later; the theories of the psychoanalyst Jaques Lacan; and the work of feminists such as Judith Butler. Each field came to regard "gender" as a practice, sometimes referred to as something that is performative.

In fact, the philosopher Simone de Beauvoir said: “One is not born a woman (or man), one becomes one.”

Yeah... these people OBVIOUSLY didn't have boys.

Our little Drew was born grunting. He's been alive for one year and already he is OBSESSED with puppies, rocks, dirt, tools, computers and the outdoors. Three days ago he picked his nose for the first time!

He's a wild little man, but we LOVE him! Here are some picts from this week:

Who wants to play in the dirt?

I guess he doesn't like the taste.

Yes, it's hard sometimes to raise a boy... but I can't imagine life any other way.

(P.S. Thanks to Wikipedia for the gender studies 411)

Rylie

We finally got to visit Rylie today! She looks AMAZING! (Skinny, skinny, skinny but AMAZING)! She was happy and strong and alert. We looked at her cute scrapbook, talked about everything, checked out her giant scar, watched The Office, and just hung out.

I love that kid. She is so special.

Anyway, things are looking really good. We're hoping she'll be out of the hospital in the next week. Cross your fingers and say your prayers!!!

Happy (well, maybe mediocre is a better description) Birthdays!

This week Drew celebrated his FIRST birthday! And Garrit turned 27!

Yeah... uh... both birthdays were pretty lame. It's my fault. I'm NO GOOD at planning birthdays. Actually, I'm getting VERY GOOD at messing them up.

On Drew's birthday I was just busy. For presents he got two unwrapped, used toys from D.I. and half of an un-frosted cupcake with no candles. Here's the 30 second video of the celebration.

Garrit's birthday was awful.

We PLANNED a special day for him: He would go to the BYU game with Blair and Tyler, and then I would pick him up and take him to his favorite restaurant, Tucanos.

Yeah. He DID go to the game.

Buuut I didn't pick him up. He couldn't reach me and I had no idea the game had ended. He tried to call me for TWO HOURS! Then he thought I died so he called the cops! Anyway, he ended up waiting in the pouring rain at the stadium for almost three hours... and when I finally picked him up we couldn't even go to Tocanos because they were booked!

So we ended up grabbing a quick bite at the Macaroni Grill (Borson fillet and chocolate cake). Garrit smiled through the shivers as he ate his steak.

What a guy. We've been together for almost 6 years, right honey? I guess you know by now what to expect.

I'm thinking maybe if I start planning NOW for next year's birthdays...

Fun!

Last weekend we went to California for Garrit's birthday. On Friday we went to Disneyland and on Saturday the boys went to the UCLA vs. BYU game while Kelli, Sarah, Audra, Drew and I drove around Beverly Hills. Sunday we hung out with the family and on Monday we went down to Long Beach. We had a really good time, but it's nice to be home again. Here's some picts:
